Infringement Fest Artist Preview: Cinnamon Aluminum

With the Infringement Festival fast approaching, this is a pretty exciting time to be in Buffalo. Between July 28th and August 7th, the Queen City will host hundreds of events and installations showcasing cutting-edge and convention-defying music, art, and performance. DO forget that TV exists for a week and treat yourself to some entertainment on the outskirts of the norm. There's a “pay what you can” admission policy for most of the shows, too, so you really have no excuse not to.

One group we're particularly looking forward to checking out is Cinnamon Aluminum, a whacked-out trio that's been dosing Buffalo with their lysergic blend of psych-rock and synth-pop since 2009. The core members - Mike Schroeder, Chris Svoboda, and Zach Acard – juggle a variety of instruments and occasionally invite collaborators to help them generate some oddly danceable, and often humorous, romps. Overall, the band sounds like a combination of candied post-punk and eccentric future shock, as if The Sugarcubes and Gorillaz had a schizophrenic baby.

The band is also known to combine visual elements like projections and animation to ensure that their shows aren't so much rock concerts as they are full-on cerebral assaults (and as much as I'd like to add “in a good way,” I'm kind of afraid of how dangerously Out There this band is).

If you're not familiar with them, check out their first full-length album, Mad Monty Mortyarty in the 8th Dimension of Nine, which is available to download for free on their Soundcloud page. Released in 2010 through through the group's audio/visual collective Level4Activated, the self-proclaimed “electronica hip-hopera concept album” tells the story of a 1920's fighter pilot who teleports through dimensions and encounters bizarre insect creatures. With each song revealing a new chapter in the story, the record “reads” like an old radio drama set to modern music.

Cinnamon Aluminum is scheduled to perform twice during the Infringement Festival: first on Saturday, July 30th at Wasteland Studios (700 Main St), and then again at the Slyboots School (350 Ellicott St) on Friday, August 5th. Be sure to check them out, but maybe plan on leaving your sanity at home, just to be safe...
